Kirkham Priory

Augustinian priory founded 1121, set in the beautiful, tranquil valley of the River Derwent. The gatehouse, dating from the late 13thC has magnificent heraldic shields. The cloister boasts not only a fine carved lavatorium where the monks washed their hands before meals, but if visiting the priory in Apr or May, a glorious display of pink cherry blossom. Well worth a visit - much more to see than appears from the entrance.
